1Title:  Kellys Island Literary Society Records ("The Islander")

 Abstract:  Datus Kelley (1788-1866) and his family were some of the first permanent settlers of what later became Rocky River, Ohio. In 1833 Datus, with brother Irad, began to purchase land near Sandusky, Ohio, on Cunninghma's Island. The island was later renamed Kelly's Island. The Kelley Island Literary Society was established pursuant to the building of Kelley Hall, a hall Datus Kelley built. On December 22, 1860 the Literary Society published its first edition of the Islander. Anyone who wished to join the literary society was welcome, including women. The collection consists of issues of a manuscript newspaper published on Kelleys Island, in Sandusky Bay, Erie County, Ohio, by the Kellys Island Literary Society. The journal was "devoted to the discussion of questions in the Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Manufactures, Politics and Morality." Prepared and written during the winter months, issues were read before weekly gatherings of inhabitants of the isolated island. Includes reports on current events, editorials, letters to the editor, articles on history, humor, philosophy, religion, science, and travel, letters of soldiers participating in the American Civil War, and advertisements.

 Abstract:  Abner Royce served in Company H, 55th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was stationed at Camp Chase, Ohio, and at camps in Virginia during the Civil War. His parents resided in Bloomville, Ohio. William D. Royce was an inspector for the Cleveland Division of the American Protective League, which in 1919 became the Loyal American League. The collection consists of descriptive rolls and letters from Abner Royce to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Royce; sketchbook of Henrietta L. Royce; papers of the Cleveland Division of the American Protective League, including a plan of organization, inspector reports, form letters and other correspondence, and handbills; miscellaneous letters, stock certificates, and other family papers.

 Abstract:  Correl Smith was a Captain in Company G, 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant on September 15, 1861, Smith assisted in organizing the 19th OVI during its muster at Alliance, Stark County, Ohio. Smith was promoted to Captain on January 2, 1863, and discharged from service on October 4, 1864. The collection consists of a diary kept by Captain Smith during the Civil War.

Ward apparently saw little battle action with his regiment while stationed in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. the collection consists of letters written by Ward to friends, including Miss Artie M. Dickson of Olivesburgh, Richland County, Ohio, during the Civil War, describing his general duties, drills, marches, lack of food, and other aspects of camp life, as well as his own feelings about the war and its causes and the competence of the military leadership.

 Abstract:  David Auld (b. 1844) was a Columbus, Ohio, native who was a drummer during the American Civil War. He served with the Twentieth Ohio Infantry and the Forty-Third Ohio Infantry and participated in Sherman's march through Georgia. Auld was a photographer and artist during his service, selling battle photographs and drawings to newspapers and journals and fellow soldiers. The collection consists of letters from David to his family, particularly his father, during the American Civil War and several letters to David from his wife and cousin.

 Abstract:  George W. Landrum (1830-1863) was a Kentucky native who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. During the American Civil War he served first in the 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment (the "Guthrie Gray" Regiment) and later as a 1st Lieutenant in the Signal Corps of the 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment. He died at Chickamauga in September 1863. The collection consists primarily of typewritten transcripts of letters sent to Landrum's sister, Amanda Wilson (Mrs. Obed J. Wilson), containing descriptions of camp life and various military encounters in which Landrum took part during the Civil War, such as Chaplin Hills (Perryville, Kentucky.) and Stone River (Murfreesboro, Tennessee).

 Abstract:  Charles Ransley Green (1845-1915) was a soldier from Milan, Ohio, who served with the 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Afterwards he corresponded with members of his regiment and collected their recollections and biographical data. The collection consists of correspondence of members of the 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry concerning their Civil War recollections, pension requests, and biographical sketches. Also included are letters from Green requesting biographical and military data, and letters from his cousins Isaac and Julia Haskins, and others.
